We’re glad you found us on the World-Wide Web! Here’s a little information about us, in a FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) format.
1. Where are you?
We’re located at 631 North Miles Road, in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. North Miles Road intersects with Dixie Highway (31 W) on one end, and with Ring Road (a bypass road) on the other end. If you are coming from Ring Road, we are toward the downtown area. If you are coming from 31 W, or Dixie Highway, you’ll travel away from the downtown. You can’t miss us– we’re the only United Methodist Church on North Miles Road.\
2. How can I get information?
Well, you’ve found our website, so there’s a start. Call us, during office hours (8:30 AM-5:00 PM, M-F) at (270) 769-3331. Or, email us at church@memorial-umc.org. We’ll be glad to help all we can.
3. What kinds of worship opportunities are there?
On Sunday morning, we have three different kinds of services.
- At 8:30 AM, we have what we call our Blended service. Here, in a more informal setting, you’ll be led by a team of singers through some praise choruses and favorite old hymns. There is often a soloist bringing some special music, and the senior pastor (Gary Chapman) will preach the sermon.
- At 9:30 AM, we have our Direct Connection service. There is a rock band with singers who lead the congregation in some favorite Contemporary Christian worship music. There is often some use of special video, and the associate pastor (Allen Gibson) preaches every week.
- At 10:45 AM, we have our Heritage service. This is the service where the pipe organ plays great hymns of the faith; where our full Cathedral Choir sings anthems; and where the traditional liturgy used in United Methodist worship is celebrated every week The senior pastor (Gary Chapman) preaches this service every Sunday.
Sunday evenings at 6:00 PM is a smaller, more intimate experience of worship in our Chapel. The gathered group calls out favorite hymns to sing, there is an extended time of sharing testimonies and prayer concerns, adn the sermon is brought by either Allen Gibson or Gary Chapman on a rotating basis, month by month
4. What about other ways to be involved in the life of the Church?
We have lots of ways you and your family can get connected to the Christian life through the ministries of our church. For example:
- Bible Study Opportunities– We have Sunday School during the 9:30 hour and the 10:45 hour, so that whichever service you choose to attend you can complement your Sunday worship experience with a time of study and fellowship with other worshippers. For a listing of our Adult opportunities, check out www.adulted.memorial-umc.org . We also have Bible studies nearly every day of the week– Monday daytime, for women, led by lay people; Tuesday noon, for people on lunch hour, led by associate pastor Allen Gibson; Tuesday night, with our other associate pastor Jan Johnson, focused on healing and the Bible; Wednesday after our family meal, led by our senior pastor Gary Chapman; and other special opportunities that come and go throughout the year
- Mission and Service Opportunities– We have an active United Methodist Women’s unit with a daytime circle and an evening circle, both meeting once a month. This group also engages in local mission opportunities, and raises funds to support mission work around the world. We host a community Food Pantry the second Wednesday of every month, serving more than 200 families by providing a generous box of pantry staples and even perishables. We have an active team of construction-and-handy-people called the Memorial Builders who build wheelchair ramps and do home repairs throughout the commnity. We are also active in the local Habitat for Humanity ministry. Another team, the Elizabethtown Mission Team, is active here and sends volunteers in mission to places where help is needed–for example, Katrina relief efforts in Missisippi, and flood relief efforts in Western kentucky over the past year or so.
- Youth and Childrens Ministries– We have a very active Youth Ministry, led by Dewey Cruze. This group meets twice weekly– Wednesday and Sunday nights– and has a wide variety of experinces, including: spiritual formation small groups, weekend retreats, summer mission trips, local fun-and-fellowship events, and even a youth band. Our children are almost as active. ON Sunday nights, we have two groups– TADPOLES, for younger elementary and older pre-school aged children; and FROGS, for older elementary aged children. On Wednesday night, we have an activity based time called JAMS, for all our children to participate in.
- Fellowship Opportunities– Our primary all-church opportunty each week is WOW, a Wednesdaynight meal beginning at 6 PM, followed by announcements and sharing and Bible Study. This is a catered meal by our church kitchen staff, and there is a charge for the meals. Reservations can be made by Tuesday preceding the meal, and if it’s your first time, the meal is on us! There are of course many other opportunities throughout the week and year, mostly based in the smaller groups of lay people who make up our very active congregation. Get plugged in, and join in with us!
These are just a few of the many ways you can get connected here at Memorial!
